Glossary Item Box

The all-new ProQuest Dialog brings our highly-regarded DataStar and Dialog platforms together, combining them into a single streamlined search experience. If your institution has migrated to ProQuest Dialog from a legacy platform such as DataStar or Dialog, the Import to My Research tool can help you import your research to ProQuest Dialog. Import to My Research is available from a temporary tab in My Research.

Import to My Research tool

When your institution is ready to migrate to the new ProQuest platform, the temporary Import to My Research tab will display in My Research. Use the Import to My Research tool to automatically import your DataStar research to your My Research account in the new ProQuest Dialog.

Important - While importing your research do not exit the session until your research has been imported. However, it is ok to close the browser at any time after you've finished working in ProQuest Dialog. The import process should be complete within a half hour.

After you import your research from a legacy platform, the DataStar link will be labeled DataStar - Done on the Import to My Research tab. If ProQuest Dialog could not convert at least one of your imported search queries, click View DataStar query details to view those queries and instructions on how to manually convert them.

Imported items

Search alerts

After importing your DataStar search alerts, you (and any other recipients specified) will begin receiving them from ProQuest Dialog at the email address you specified with your My Research account. The email title of your imported alert will initially contain the 4 letter database name, the title of the alert, and your 6 character DataStar username. This title information can be edited in My Research. The number of alerts will no longer appear in the subject line, but in the body of the email to match the format of all alerts created in ProQuest Dialog.

To manage your imported alerts, click the Alerts tab in My Research. The Alerts help topic details how to manage, set up or modify an alert.

Any subaccount or project code associated with an alert imported from DataStar will appear in the Message field for each alert.  To access the message field, click Modify alert, then click Continue at the bottom of the layer.

Saved searches

To access your imported saved searches, click the Saved Searches tab in My Research. The Your Searches help topic details how to save and manage your searches.

Multifile searches

Multifile searches (also known as StarSearches) are now called Saved Searches in ProQuest Dialog. Imported Multifile searches will be found in the Saved Searches tab. The Your Searches help topic details how to save and manage your searches in ProQuest Dialog.

A DataStar StarSearch is a multidatabase search where different search queries can search different databases within one search. Because some search syntax has changed in the new ProQuest, StarSearches are no longer supported in the new platform. However, the FDB command provides similar functionality.

For example,

MESH("antineoplastic agents") AND FDB(MEDLINEPROF)

EMB("antineoplastic agent") AND FDB(EMBASE)

S1 OR S2

RSS Feeds

Click the RSS Feeds tab in My Research to access imported RSS feeds. To update your RSS Reader, select the new ProQuest Dialog URLs and copy them into your RSS Reader. The RSS Feeds help topic details how to create and manage your RSS Feeds in My Research.

View original DataStar query

For all imported DataStar email alerts, saved searches, and RSS feeds, you can view the original underlying DataStar search query, and compare it to its corresponding new ProQuest Dialog search query. Click the View DataStar query link for one of your imported items in My Research. The original DataStar query will open in a new window.

Keep track of imported items that you have reviewed

After your research from DataStar has been imported, a Mark as reviewed link will display with each saved search, alert and RSS feed. Once you review an item, click the link. It will change to Reviewed. Once the item is changed to Reviewed, you cannot change it back.

Unconverted queries

It is possible that not all imported queries will be successfully converted using the new ProQuest Dialog syntax. Any unconverted queries are available via the link View DataStar search details under the Import to My Research tab.

DataStar Search Query Conversion Guide

As a result of this consolidation of legacy platforms, you will notice some search syntax differences related to the operators, truncation/wildcard characters, and field codes you've been using. For any search queries that do not automatically convert to the new ProQuest Dialog platform, refer to the DataStar Search Query Conversion Guide for conversion help.
