Sharing content from transactional databases with other ProQuest Dialog users
Articles and other content that you find in ProQuest Dialog have an associated cost. So do services including setting up search alerts, creating RSS feeds, and saving searches. There are two ways that your institution might pay for these costs associated with ProQuest Dialog databases:
- Pre-paid databases — Your institution pays a flat subscription rate for the database. You do not incur charges as you search and select content. You can display documents in available formats, print, email, export, and save documents—all without incurring charges. Similarly, you also do not pay for ProQuest Dialog services to set up search alerts, create RSS feeds, or saved searches. The subscription covers all user research activity costs.
- Transactional databases — When the interface displays database or document lists that follow this pricing model, icons and links will display that show you retail pricing for content from selected databases. Additionally, popups showing retail pricing for individual items will display as appropriate when you elect to email, print, or save items—or request a document in a specific available format such as Brief citation or Full text. Similarly, popups will display advising you of monthly fees associated with maintaining search alerts, RSS feeds, and saved searches.
Important to know — Click the Change link in the blue bar at the top of any ProQuest Dialog page to display the Select Databases page. Transactional databases display a corresponding $ Pricing link. Click the link to view pricing information for content and services in that database.
Using project codes to track database content and services
Project codes are alphanumeric character strings that your administrator can define in the ProQuest Administrator Module (PAM) to associate research activity costs with a particular project or client.
You may encounter a page requiring you to enter a project code whenever you initiate a ProQuest Dialog session.
- Enter your project code if you have one and click Continue to begin searching in ProQuest Dialog.
- If you do not have a project code, click Skip to begin searching.
Session costs are associated with your company or organizational account, whether you enter a project code or not.
If you are logged in using a My Research account and you pause your session, then resume it later, you will not be charged again for document formats you accessed in the first part of the session. Similarly, if you are in a per-session billing plan you will not be charged again when you restore a paused session if you are using a My Research account. However, if you log in via any other method and then log in to My Research, you might be charged for a separate session initially, but if you then choose to restore a paused session you won’t be charged again.
When setting up your alerts, RSS feeds or saved searches, you will be prompted to add a project code if project codes are enabled. Project codes may be optional or required.
Pricing information for database content
As you conduct your research in transactional databases, you will see the corresponding $ Pricing link in the following places in the interface. Click the link to display pricing information for content from the database, or for individual corresponding content items:
- Select Databases page
- Database product homepages
Important to know — If a product has several subordinate ‘child’ database products, the ‘parent’ product’s homepage will include pricing information for content from each of the child products. Database-level content pricing will include:
- Document format pricing.
- Monthly service maintenance pricing for search alerts, RSS feeds, and saved searches for content from transactional databases.
- Search results lists.
- Document views (displayed documents).
- My Research saved document lists.
- Selected Items (marked list).
Important to know — Pricing information reflects retail prices. Adjustments that account for your institution’s billing plan are reflected on the monthly billing statement.
Pricing information for database services
Services include creating search alerts and RSS feeds, and saving searches. Individual transactional databases apply monthly maintenance fees for these services. The associated estimated monthly fee will display when you create an alert or RSS feed, or save a search. Click the $ Pricing link corresponding to any database on the Select Databases page at any time during your session to view service and content pricing.
Important to know—Charges will only be incurred when your saved search—or the search that underlies an alert or RSS feed—targets one or more transactional databases.
Emailing, printing, exporting, or saving transactional content
Whether you select one or more documents on a Search Results page, or display a single document—and then elect to email, print, export, or save that content—a Price Preview popup will open. The popup will display pricing information for the selected content.
Important to know — You are never charged twice, during the same session, for the same document, in the same level of detail, from the same transactional database. For example, you can choose to display, email, or export the full-text format version of the same document from the same database during a single session, with only the first action incurring a charge. However, if you end your session, begin a second session—and then elect to display, email, or export that same document from that same database in the same format level of detail, you will incur a charge.
Sharing content from transactional databases with other ProQuest Dialog users
If you email or share a link to content from a transactional database with another ProQuest Dialog user, the recipient will first log in if necessary, enter a project code if necessary, and then be advised of pricing for the item. The user can either decide to follow your link and display the document, accepting the charges, or decline and instead go directly to the Basic Search page.
Maximum spending limit
Your administrator can specify a maximum spending limit per session. If you reach the limit during your session, an appropriate message displays. The message is for informational purposes only. You can continue your session. Further charges will be associated with either your project code or institution, as appropriate. When you start a new session, the dollar amount for the new session starts over at zero.
Note that your per-session spending limit will not be reset if you restart a paused session. In addition, if you reached your limit during the first part of the session, that limit will still affect the session when you restore it.
